TASTING: Not Your Average Wine Tour @ Maine Brew Bus
Jun

TASTING: Not Your Average Wine Tour @ Maine Brew Bus

DETAILS: Portland, Maine has been known for their unique craft beer scene for some time now. But, what about our wine scene?! Now with over 25 different wineries in the state—most working with products grown specifically in Maine (in spite of the typical harsh weather and shorter growing season)—the abilities to think outside the vine has truly taken root. Portland has become home to a few of the big names and newest contenders in this ever-growing industry. Join us on this unique tour to explore the Portland wine scene in a way that you won’t find anywhere else and with stops that will truly change your perspective on what wine even is!

For our first stop, we will be visiting Cellardoor Winery. In 2007, Bettina Doulton bought Cellardoor Winery of Lincolnville, ME. Once she visited Lincolnville in December 2006, and saw the 68-acre, 200-year-old farm that featured a 1790s post-and-beam barn and old farmhouse, as well as a state-of-the-art winery across the road, it was a done deal. Cellardoor at the Point is a 5,000 square foot tasting room and event space to tell their story to a larger audience and to pour their award-winning wines in a repurposed space that features a large horseshoe public tasting bar, a smaller private bar that can be reserved for groups, and a large event space.

Next up, Eighteen Twenty Wines. Founded in 2017 and located in Portland’s East Bayside neighborhood, Eighteen Twenty is named for the year that Maine became a state. Their primary focus is wine made from locally grown rhubarb. They partner with local farms to get the rhubarb and make all of their wines, by hand, at their location on Anderson Street. Their wines may be made uniquely but people are often mistaking them for wines you know and love like – french roses, sauvignon blancs, and pinot grigios.

Last but not least, we’ll stop at Honeymaker Mead. Founded in 2007 by Ben Alexander as Maine Mead Works, Honeymaker strives to reintroduce the world to the oldest of all fermented beverages: a wine made from honey called mead. In collaboration with South African scholar Dr. Garth Cambray, they developed a state-of-the-art continuous fermentation system, bringing mead making into the 21st century. While traditional mead is often heavy and syrupy, you’ll be pleased to find that the team has developed a light, dry, modern take on the formula. Learn about the secret of their success and taste their extensive list of variations, including some invigorating sparkling Ram Island mead blends.

After the tour, we’ll drop you back off at Old Port Spirits and Cigars to grab some bottles and cans before continuing your exploration of lively downtown Portland.

Please note that tour stops may change without notice due to events and availability of staff at each venue.

COST: $70

WEEKLONG: Hermann J. Wiemer Wines @ Eventide, The Honey Paw, Hugo's
Jun
17
to Jun 23

WEEKLONG: Hermann J. Wiemer Wines @ Eventide, The Honey Paw, Hugo's

HJW 1.png

DETAILS: The restaurants of the Big Tree Hospitality group, Hugo's, Eventide Oyster Co. and The Honey Paw will all be featuring wines from Hermann J. Wiemer for Portland Wine Week.

Hermann J. Wiemer is regarded as one of the pioneers of viticulture and winemaking in the Finger Lakes region of New York.

As a native of Bernkastel, Germany who emigrated to the Finger Lakes in the 1960s, Hermann J. Wiemer was uniquely qualified to help establish and create a wine region now known for its Riesling identity. His mother’s family had been making wine in Germany’s Mosel Valley for more than 300 years. His father, a skilled nurseryman, had been in charge of the Agricultural Experiment Station in Bernkastel and was responsible for restoring vines in the Mosel region after WWII. As a result, he recognized the importance of grafting vinifera on American rootstock. Ultimately, this conviction led Hermann’s father to convince Dr. Thanisch – who maintained the most famous Riesling vineyard in the world – to graft Mosel Rieslings onto American rootstock.

Hermann spent the summers of his youth learning to graft by hand and later complemented the skill and knowledge passed from father to son by attending Germany’s premier winemaking and viticultural institutions. However, it wasn’t until his experience in the Pfalz at the Viticultural Research institute in Neustadt(Forschungsinstitut fur Reblausbekampfung und Wiederaufbau der LLFA Neustadt) that Hermann was finally able to put his life experiences and education to practice. This practical training and research institute, headed by the influential Dr. Helmut Becker, only accepted three admissions per year, and Hermann was one of them.

All he needed was the right place to apply his skill and passion from wine-making at the highest levels. In the little town of Dundee, on the western shore of Seneca Lake, he found it. Hermann discovered that the cool climate and gravelly soils of the Finger Lakes were similar to his family’s vineyards in the Mosel Valley. At a time when very few thought it was possible to grow vinifera varietals on Seneca Lake, Hermann believed that the unique soil types and moderating weather effects of the Finger Lakes would make it possible to produce great wines here. German folk wisdom held that Riesling grapevines would flourish where black cherry trees thrived. Subsequently, Hermann purchased 80 acres of land on which we now have the winery and the “HJW Vineyard”. Countless hours, an uncanny skill at grafting, and willingness to experiment to find the best clones of each varietal for the region helped Hermann establish the vineyard. An obsessive dedication to making the most authentic and elegant wine has slowly and increasingly caught the attention of the world’s most discerning wine critics.
