TASTING EVENT: Wild Beer & Wild Wine @ Oxbow

DETAILS: This unique tasting will blur the lines between wild fermented beers and bottle fermented wines! Set to a sound track of David Bowie, Tim from Oxbow and Ned Swain from Devenish will serve a flight of beers and wines, all fermented with wild yeasts, and discuss how much overlap there actually is between these fizzy, ambient, yeast-wild beverages.

About Ned Swain:
Ned fell in love with wine while studying in Florence Italy as a teenager.  On his return to Maine he lucked into a job at the Blue Hill Wine Shop and worked for David Witter: a man who played a big part in creating the fine wine market in Maine back in the 70s and 80s.  Ned moved to Portland in 2002 at 21 to expand Devenish Wines although he had no experience in sales or distribution.  Ned grew up in and with the southern Maine restaurant scene and quickly realized he was happier and more successful when he focused on wines that he was passionate about regardless of whether or not anyone had heard of the places they came from.  As the food scene in Maine continued to develop Ned focused more and more on wines that tasted like the climate, soil, and culture of the specific place they came from.  Eventually many of those wines began to be called "Natural".  Ned has had the opportunity to watch from the inside as the Natural Wine movement in America coalesced and gained momentum.  Most recently Ned has been running across parts of Italy and visiting small producers along the way in preparation for writing a food and wine travel book.

COST: $20 per person

TASTING EVENT: Grower Champagne & Caviar @ Central Provisions

DETAILS: Finish out a week of wine on a high note! Mark your calendar for this champagne and caviar pairing event at the Central Provisions downstairs bar, featuring Grower Champagne from Victorieux and caviar from Browne Trading Company.

Grower Champagnes are those produced by the same estate that owns the vineyards where the grapes are grown. Récoltant-Manipulant is the term in French, and Grower Champagnes can be identified by "RM" on the wine label. Established in Maine, Victorieux Champagne currently imports a Brut Millésime 2009, a non-vintage Brut Tradition and Brut Rosé. The event will feature the latter two. These true Grower Champagnes, sourced from a registered Vigneron Independent, are vinted in a three-generational family winery located in the Côte de Sézanne region of Champagne, France.

COST: $10 per half glass, $20 per glass, $75 per bottle. Caviar priced separately.

Reserve: No reservations necessary -- just come!

WINEMAKER NIGHT: Amarone, Ripasso and the Legacy of Giovanni Bertani @ Solo Italiano

DETAILS: Meet winemaker Giovanni Bertani, great-grandson of the mind behind Ripasso and Amarone, of Tenuta Santa Maria! He will be in-house to talk about his family's love and use of Recioto and Corvina as well as their traditional, yet innovative, approach to winemaking that produced these iconic styles of wine we know today.

Seating will occur all night long, with the daily menu designed around the wines on offer. Chef Paolo Laboa will prepare classic Genovese dishes that we all know and love, but be sure to expect traditional Veneto cuisine to pepper the menu as well. Since it is not a pre-fixe menu, you are welcome to eat as much or as little as you’d like–opt for a full family style, five-course affair with a complete flight of Giovanni’s wines or eat light with one course and a glass of wine. The choice is yours!

This is not a ticketed event, so reservations are strongly encouraged. Feel free to call with any questions.

COST: Varies

BURGER NIGHT: Featuring Glou Glou wines from Savio Soares @ Drifters Wife

DETAILS: Burger Night and Glou Glou Wines! Come get casual with juicy burgers and very drinkable wines from Savio Soares Selections. Importer Savio Soares himself will be a special guest for the evening. Vegetarian sandwich also available. Wines by the glass will be between $10-$14 (bottles $40+). Menu and wine is à la carte.

Savio Soares features what he describes as "Expressive Wines from Small Growers." After working with big names and brands in top Paris restaurants, he began to tour the European countryside getting to know the makers and growers. He says, "Those excursions provided a new understanding of the wines I was working with and broadened my wine appreciation. My focus moved to unknown small growers and in many ways unknown regions, just for the pleasure of discovery. My palate has evolved too but increasing towards appreciating more natural wines, wines with curiosity, nerve and uniqueness. I am addicted to finesse and grace and concentration that seeps through a less extracted and weighty wine. These wines are my selections and there is more out there to discover!"

COST: Varies. This is not a ticketed event. No reservations. Walk-ins first come, first serve!
