CLASS: Rancio Wine with Patrick McDonald + Lauren Clarke from Haus Alpenz @ Chaval

DETAILS:  What is Rancio? “Cataluyna is home to one of the oldest forms of winemaking, a tradition of dry, aged, oxidative wines of a type that once would have been found along the Mediterranean coast, from Greece to Iberia. Known in Roussillon as Rancio sec (Vi Ranci, in Catalan), these are dry, unfortified wines made as they have been for more than two millennia: transformed by time, exposure to oxygen and, often, heat. Ideal as an aperitif, with all manner of pork preparations including barbeque, or after-dinner, Rancio sec is completely shelf-stable after opening.”

“Made in minute quantities, Rancio sec was until recently served only on special occasions to a winemaker’s family and friends; its historic importance and endangered status recognized by Slow Food in 1989. Today, there is a quiet revival and recognition of its place in the modern world, as oxidative, umami-driven wines attract renewed interest.”

Join us and learn about different styles of Rancio wines, how to pair them with food, and use them in cocktails.

COST: $10 Wine and Restaurant Industry, $15 General Public

WEEKLONG: Hermann J. Wiemer Wines @ Eventide, The Honey Paw, Hugo's

WEEKLONG: Hermann J. Wiemer Wines @ Eventide, The Honey Paw, Hugo's

HJW 1.png

DETAILS: The restaurants of the Big Tree Hospitality group, Hugo's, Eventide Oyster Co. and The Honey Paw will all be featuring wines from Hermann J. Wiemer for Portland Wine Week.

Hermann J. Wiemer is regarded as one of the pioneers of viticulture and winemaking in the Finger Lakes region of New York.

As a native of Bernkastel, Germany who emigrated to the Finger Lakes in the 1960s, Hermann J. Wiemer was uniquely qualified to help establish and create a wine region now known for its Riesling identity. His mother’s family had been making wine in Germany’s Mosel Valley for more than 300 years. His father, a skilled nurseryman, had been in charge of the Agricultural Experiment Station in Bernkastel and was responsible for restoring vines in the Mosel region after WWII. As a result, he recognized the importance of grafting vinifera on American rootstock. Ultimately, this conviction led Hermann’s father to convince Dr. Thanisch – who maintained the most famous Riesling vineyard in the world – to graft Mosel Rieslings onto American rootstock.

Hermann spent the summers of his youth learning to graft by hand and later complemented the skill and knowledge passed from father to son by attending Germany’s premier winemaking and viticultural institutions. However, it wasn’t until his experience in the Pfalz at the Viticultural Research institute in Neustadt(Forschungsinstitut fur Reblausbekampfung und Wiederaufbau der LLFA Neustadt) that Hermann was finally able to put his life experiences and education to practice. This practical training and research institute, headed by the influential Dr. Helmut Becker, only accepted three admissions per year, and Hermann was one of them.

All he needed was the right place to apply his skill and passion from wine-making at the highest levels. In the little town of Dundee, on the western shore of Seneca Lake, he found it. Hermann discovered that the cool climate and gravelly soils of the Finger Lakes were similar to his family’s vineyards in the Mosel Valley. At a time when very few thought it was possible to grow vinifera varietals on Seneca Lake, Hermann believed that the unique soil types and moderating weather effects of the Finger Lakes would make it possible to produce great wines here. German folk wisdom held that Riesling grapevines would flourish where black cherry trees thrived. Subsequently, Hermann purchased 80 acres of land on which we now have the winery and the “HJW Vineyard”. Countless hours, an uncanny skill at grafting, and willingness to experiment to find the best clones of each varietal for the region helped Hermann establish the vineyard. An obsessive dedication to making the most authentic and elegant wine has slowly and increasingly caught the attention of the world’s most discerning wine critics.

PANEL DISCUSSION: What, Really, is a "Natural" Wine?
Jun
18
3:00 PM15:00

PANEL DISCUSSION: What, Really, is a "Natural" Wine?

DETAILS: “Natural Wine” is the hottest, and most hotly debated wine category today. Many contemporary wine professionals have embraced “natural” processes as the driving force behind their portfolios, wine lists and offers. It’s also a thrilling category for open-minded drinkers who are interested in new styles and up-and-coming wine regions, as well as those who care about environmental sustainability and their own personal well-being.⁣⁣

Join natural wine thought-leaders, influencers, and makers Ned Swain, Zev Rovine, Josefa Concannon and ⁣Brian Smith for this insightful and delicious natural wine panel discussion. Each panelist will serve a wine during the talk.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
If you're a wine professional or amateur enthusiast, and you care about wine’s history, present, and future, this is an event not to be missed! You’ll leave this panel discussion captivated by the wines themselves and inspired by a mind-broadening understanding of natural wine.⁣⁣

MODERATOR:
Ned Swain — Ned Swain fell in love with wine while studying in Florence, Italy as a teenager. On his return to Maine he lucked into a job at the Blue Hill Wine Shop and worked for David Witter: a man who played a big part in creating the fine wine market in Maine back in the 1970s and 1980s.  Ned moved to Portland in 2002 at the age of 21 to expand Devenish Wines, although he had no experience in sales or distribution. Ned grew up in and with the southern Maine restaurant scene and quickly realized he was happier and more successful when he focused on wines that he was passionate about regardless of whether or not anyone had heard of the places they came from. As the food scene in Maine continued to develop, Ned focused more and more on wines that tasted like the climate, soil, and culture of the specific place they came from.  Eventually many of those wines began to be called “Natural”.  Ned has had the opportunity to watch from the inside as the Natural Wine movement in America coalesced and gained momentum. Most recently, Ned has been running across parts of Italy and visiting small producers along the way, in preparation for writing a food and wine travel book.

THE PANEL: Each panelist will serve a wine during the talk.

Zev Rovine — Zev started his own company bringing in Natural wine and has had a huge impact on the movement in the US.

Josefa Concannon — Josefa has been in the Food and Beverage industry her whole life.  She made the jump to working for Louis Dressner over 15 years ago. Dressner was one of the first companies to focus exclusively on wines made more naturally and to be comfortable having that conversation and explaining the complex technical differences.

Brian Smith — Brian studied wine making in CA and then returned to New England with his wife and bought an old salt water farm in mid coast Maine.  He started Oyster River Winegrowers as a DIY homestead and over the years has persevered through all the Maine winters and initial skepticism of Maine wine to figure out how to make exciting wines fermented with native yeast on the coast of Maine

Lio Restaurant is the third full service Restaurant from Cara and Cecile Stadler.  The mother-daughter pair first teamed up professionally in 2009, when they formed Gourmet Underground (one of Beijing’s only private fine-dining clubs), and Eighty Ate Hospitality was established in 2018 to encompass all of the projects Cara and Cecile run in the great state of Maine.

While Cara grew up making Shanghainese classics in a kitchen infused with ginger and shaoxing wine, her training is far more global. Beginning her career at 16, she worked at Café Rouge in Berkeley, followed by Striped Bass in Philadelphia, before heading to Paris to hone her fine dining skills. While in France, after staging at Guy Savoy, Cara worked at Gordon Ramsay Au Trianon Palace, his two-Michelin star restaurant in Versailles.

At the same time as she was learning from these modern masters, Cara began noticing what has become her core guiding concept – what she calls “the perfect bite.” Specifically, she became fascinated with how, in a single bite, flavors harmonize in a sequence of moments, supported by the cadence of texture. Since then, Cara is constantly striving to put both new “perfect bites” and some classics on the table.

With the aim of finding more flavors and texture to bring to this concept, Cara headed to Asia in 2008. After working briefly in Singapore at French-Japanese restaurant Saint Pierre and heading up Gourmet Underground in Beijing in 2009, Cara moved to Shanghai and began her long-standing relationship with one of China’s most esteemed restaurateurs, David Laris. Starting out as sous-chef of Laris – at the time, one of Asia’s fine-dining landmarks – Cara later launched David’s private dining restaurant, 12 Chairs, which has been hailed one of Asia’s best restaurants by The Miele Guide.

Cara returned to the U.S. in November 2011, eager to work with her mother to bring to Brunswick her unique twist of contemporary Asian fusion combined with the bounty of local Maine flavors. Tao Yuan Restaurant opened in May of 2012 as Cara and Cecile’s first full service restaurant. Three years later, Bao Bao Dumpling House was born – a fast casual dumpling shop in Portland’s West End. This was followed in 2018 by Lio Restaurant, in downtown Portland, a modern European small plates restaurant with a strong focus on wine. In 2014, Cara was recognized as a Food and Wine Best New Chef. Each year since 2014 she has been nominated for James Beard Rising Star award, a nod to the industries future talent and leaders.

Blind Tasting: "Fruit de Mer" Organic Wine and Maine Seafood @ The Shop

DETAILS: Maine is beloved for so many reasons. One of them, for us, is the diversity of life that our Maine waters can provide. From farmed and wild oysters, clams, mussels, to pollack, hake, and crab, to sugar kelp. The list goes on and on.

In this blind tasting of 5 wines (1/2 glass each) and Maine seafood pairings, Caleb and Justin will guide you through the primal, instinctual sensations of salty, bitter, sweet, and savory in this blind tasting and discuss their thoughts behind these great pairings before revealing the wines to the group.

Presented by Justin DeWalt from Chartrand Imports, and Certified Sommelier Caleb Cole. With the partnership of Kit Paschal at The Shop.

Disclaimer: This event is NOT for those allergic or with a particular disdain for seafood or shellfish.

COST: $45 per person (includes wines, food and tax)

RESERVE: PURCHASE TICKETS

LINKS: The Shop and Chartrand Imports

Caleb, Justin and Kit first met while working at Hugo's restaurant in Portland. They have a great respect for each others paths in the food and wine industry. Caleb and Justin when not bantering about the madness of a particular white Minervois, can be found together fishing, or catching a good concert.

Justin DeWalt has been based in Portland for 8-years and is the Sales Director for the first solely organic wine importer in the country, Chartrand Imports! After working in restaurant management for many years, living in the Virgin Islands, South Africa, and Chile, Justin appreciates using his experiences from an array of paths to bring his passion for organic viticulture to the streets! You could probably find him diving in Casco Bay and foraging some sugar kelp for this event... Muscadet anyone?

Caleb Cole is an accomplished Sommelier through the Court of Masters as well as Advanced Certified with Wine & Spirits Education Trust (WSET). Caleb found his passion for food and wine in The Rocky Mountains and now, after over 10-years of restaurant work, balances his time in pairing life with Maine and Colorado. Caleb has a undeniable ability to be a detective in the glass and on the plate- being able to pinpoint what you are tasting and why, while communicating and relating to the masses, in a playful and gentle manner.

About Monica Ordóñez

Thirty-two years ago Jorge Ordóñez founded the brokerage company, Fine Estates of Spain to fulfill a hole within the US consumer wine market and would go on to be dubbed the “Pioneer of Awakening Spanish Wines”. As Jorge transitions to the next stage in his career, he passes the torch to his two children, Victor and Monica. She grew up in the famous vineyards of Muga, Sierra Cantabria and beyond, learning the history of each family’s beginning in Spain. (SOLD OUT) CLASS: New Cali Wine Tasting with Sommelier Stella Hernandez @ Lolita
Jun
22
3:00 PM15:00

(SOLD OUT) CLASS: New Cali Wine Tasting with Sommelier Stella Hernandez @ Lolita

DETAILS: California has a rich wine history dating back to the mid-1800's.  Ridge and Mondavi, Beaulieu and Heitz all flourished in the 1960's and '70's.  Then there was the Judgement of Paris in 1976, a competition in which American wines were blind tasted against their French counterparts in Bordeaux and brought home top honors.  The 1990's brought cult California wines from Napa that started to define the style most of us think of when we think of California -  ripe, full, and oaky - bold, and very American.

Today, alongside that classic style, California wine is evolving in a lot of different directions and there is so much amazing wine being made from Mendocino to Santa Barbara and beyond. There's a new style emerging - a more tempered one.  One might say the wines are even delicate.  It's no longer just about Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, but beautiful Valdigué, Cinsault, Malvasia, and Chenin Blanc.  And different approaches to working with classic varietals like Zinfandel.

Join certified sommelier Stella Hernandez to taste a bunch of these gorgeous 'new Cali' wines. We'll have some really limited production wines including one from Martha Stoumen in Mendocino that will change your mind about Zinfandel. (And, with only 1540 cases made, super hard to get your hands on!)  Or Birichino's Cinsault from 128 year old ungrafted vines in the iconic Bechtold Vineyard in the Central Coast.  Sparkling Malvasia, check!  We're building a line up of some fun wines to taste and compare. (And, maybe some classics, too.)

COST: $55 (includes wine, food, tax, and service)

RESERVE: Get Tickets! Limited to 12 people.

Pete and Jessica Sueltenfuss

Pete Sueltenfuss cut his teeth cooking in and around Boston for more than a decade.  Restaurants such as Davio’s, Eat, Eastern Standard and Green Street helped Pete to identify a true passion for whole animal butchery and charcuterie.  Upon moving to Portland with his wife, Jessica, Sueltenfuss cooked at Fore Street and Miyake before eventually taking the helm at Grace.  In 2015 Pete and Jessica opened Other Side Delicatessen, becoming Portland’s source for locally sourced, hand made deli meats, charcuterie and a pretty killer sandwich board.

Long before moving to Portland, Jessica Sueltenfuss was absorbing as much as possible about wine and service from some of the most acclaimed restaurants in Boston.  Leaving New England Culinary Institute with a degree in Restaurant and Hospitality Management for No.9 Park, Jessica was on the fast track to an exciting career. From there, she took the lead role of Service Manager at Eastern Standard and led an award winning team of servers and bar tenders.  Leaving Boston for the greener pastures of Portland, Jessica worked as a server at Fore Street and led the team at Miyake before moving to focus on her passion for wine and represent Easterly Wines.

The couples’ latest venture, Other Side Diner will open in April 2019 with friendly service and well-prepared American/Greek diner fare in an every day, neighborhood environment.

Lulu McClellan will be here from Handley Cellars was founded in 1982 by her mom Milla.

Lulu is the younger of Milla Handley’s two daughters. She and her sister Megan grew up on the Handley Estate, riding the bus to the winery after school every day. When she was a child, the vineyard and gardens were Lulu’s playground. After graduating from Anderson Valley High School, she moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where she studied Rhetoric at UC Berkeley, and worked part time at Chez Panisse. She loved being part of the food community but realized her place was in the country, working in the fields, so she traveled to Galicia, Spain, where she apprenticed in the cellar at Do Ferreiro Winery. There, she learned how to make and appreciate the Spanish varietal Albariño.

Upon her return from Spain, Lulu moved to Maine, seeking to learn, first-hand, old-world farming and homesteading skills. Since then she’s been apprenticing on diversified farms, learning to drive horses, work sheep with Border Collies, and survive harsh winters. She’s also been working with The Greenhorns, a grassroots non-profit organization of young farmers working to promote responsible small-scale farming and the communities that form around that lifestyle. Lulu currently lives and farms in Maine, with her boat-building partner Scott, but comes back to California often to check in with winery staff, visit her Mom, and renew her deep bond with the land and community here in Anderson Valley.

Erica is the principal of Wine Wise, a wine education and events service and is skilled at creating truly creative and memorable wine experiences that take guests beyond a typical tasting with her intimate understanding of what makes each wine unique. And she’ll do it with her trademark sense of humor.

The menu will be available close to the date of the event as Chef takes his inspiration from only the freshest local ingredients. Due to the nature of this event we regret that we cannot accommodate food substitutions.

CLASS: Barre, Bubbles + Bites (60 minute class) @ Solo Italiano

DETAILS: Effervescence and community at Barre & Bubbles. Move, strengthen, and center yourself in this hour-long Barre class with instructor Ellie Lovin followed by bubbles and bites at Solo Italiano.

Inspired by classical ballet, Pilates, yoga and functional movement, Barre enhances your mind-body connection, refines your movement quality and builds strength, balance and grace from the inside out. Open to all movers--no dance or barre class experience necessary. BYO yoga mat and a pair of regular (not grippy) socks. (60min class)

Let your endorphins flow before the bubbles are poured! Bring a friend or make 29 new ones at a joyful total body barre class around Solo Italiano's open, light-filled bar between iconic views of Commercial Street and Portland's working waterfront. Following your class, Crush and Easterly distributors will pour a rewarding flight of sparkling wines—Ortrugo Vivace, Prosecco Superiore, Franciacorte, and Nebbiolo Brut. Chef Paolo and Mercedes will match each pour with an appropriate noontime nibble to further the ride your endorphins will be on!

Elly Lovin has been wearing leg warmers and dancing around the house since 1986. She began her studies in classical ballet at age five and went on to earn a BFA in Dance from the University of Iowa with a focus in ballet, modern dance and performance. She has a 200-hour Vinyasa RYT certification through Frog Lotus Yoga (2008) and has taught yoga, ballet-barre fitness and creative dance to children and adults in Iowa, Taiwan, Chicago, New York City and Portland, Maine. Elly teaches locally at The Rooted Collective, Portland School of Ballet, Casco Bay Movers and Waynflete Schools. She is a Maine Arts Commission Teaching Artist, teaching creative dance residencies in public schools throughout Maine. Elly believes in movement as celebration, not punishment, and that any form of movement practice should serve to deepen the movers’ relationship to themselves and the world around them in a meaningful way.

Special Event: Exploring Italian White Wine @ Solo Italiano

Special Event: Exploring Italian White Wine @ Solo Italiano

DETAILS: Details: Join us as we welcome the ever-so-charming Fred Mullins of VIAS Imports. Jesse, our resident wine guy, will accompany him–and you–in discussing and simplifying the labyrinth of Italian white wines. Many are aromatic, most have acidity, some have a touch more fruit than others, yet they all have a role! And how the heck does one begin to read an Italian list for ‘vini bianchi’? We will help you decipher both their place and utility by understanding climate, terroir and regional cuisine. The nightly menu will be yours from which to curate a dining experience based on suggested pairings, and Rosemont will offer the option to pre-order these exclusively selected wines following your dinner. Because you will select your own menu and quantity of courses, timeframe will vary by guest, but plan to spend to be with us until at least 7pm.

Cost: $30 per person includes flight of 5 Premier Italian White Wines. Not including food, tax, gratuity.
