Special note:

Each year at this event we pour a sparkling wine from the portfolio of one of the panelists to have a toast to kick off Portland Wine Week. We are so pleased to announce that we will be pouring the delicious Ukrainian Traditional method sparkling wine for this occasion. This has put a whole new excitement and greater purpose into this event. It is now a fundraiser for World Central Kitchen to aid their efforts of feeding the fleeing people of Ukraine. If you go to the event page, you'll notice that there are two ticket prices:

  • $15 ticket price to attend

  • A donation in $25 increments to World Central Kitchen

These are two mutually exclusive "tickets". You do not need to donate to purchase a ticket to attend, and you do not need to attend to donate. But there are benefits to doing both because Gayle is donating a Magnum (1.5 Liter) of Artwinery's Soloking sparkling wine to present to the person donating the most and in attendance.

Sommelier/Owner at Wine Wise, Founder of Portland Wine Week, Wine Consultant at Falmouth Country Club.Erica grew up in Portland, Maine and is has an undergraduate degree in International Studies from University of Sourthn Maine and a Masters in Business from the UNH Whittemore School of Business. After which she began her wine training at the Culinary Institute of America’s wine program in St. Helena-Napa Valley. She used her vacation time to fly out and take wine classes and then ultimately to sit for their exams. After that program, she continued her studies with WSET and “the Court”. She funded Wine Wise as a side-hustle in 2010 and became fully committed to it in 2012. She founded Portland Wine Week in 2018. Join her on land and at sea in the iconic Portland, Maine, and abroad on small-group trips to renowned wine regions of the world.

Featured Panelists:

Michele D’Aprix
Winemaker/Owner MDX Wines Côtes du Castillon, France. Originally from upstate New York, Michele D’Aprix worked as a bartender in Boston while studying Organic Chemistry at UMass. Her ability to multi-task was finely honed behind the bar. Those years in service (along with her extremely limited lab skills) landed Michele her first winery gig at Dry Creek Vineyard in California. She loved the job so much that she decided to enroll in UC Davis’s Fermentation Science program (earning her 2nd degree), this time in Viticulture & Enology. In search of more experience, Michele found work at wineries in the Rhone Valley and South Africa, finally arriving in Bordeaux, where she trained with the accomplished and highly-regarded vigneron Stéphane Derenocourt. Fully-immersed at this point, Michele studied his methodology in both the vineyard and cellar, combining the fine art of organic farming and minimal intervention winemaking. Ready to add her own touch after few years, Michele became the winemaker at a small property in the Montagne-St Emilion A.O.C. where she developed a solo project, calling it "Pentimento.” At the start of it, and to this day (much to her surprise), she is the only American woman making her own wine in the region of Bordeaux. She now splits her winemaking efforts between Bordeaux, Costières de Nîmes (France) and Montsant (Spain), where she has multiple projects. Michele’s home is still in the U.S., and she spends a large amount of her State-side time traveling to visit customers.

Penny Murray
Export Manager - Planeta, Mt Etna, Sicily. Penelope (Penny) Alexandra Murray, born and raised in England, left her country in 1988 with the aim of travelling and learning about foreign cultures. She initially sold artwork throughout Italy, then, motivated by her strong interest in different aspects of the wine trade, she entered into the world of wine. She consulted in the areas of export and public relations for various companies, then joined Castello del Terriccio Winery, Castellina M.ma – Pisa, where she stayed for 5 years. Today, Penny is Export Manager for Sicily’s acclaimed Planeta wines, a collection of boutique wineries that represent a journey through Sicily, showcasing the island’s diverse terroir.

Gayle Corrigan
Saperavi - Importer of Ukrainian and Georgian Wines, With a MBA in accounting from Boston University, Gayle has held various roles as CFO, VP, director, and chief of staff of corporations in the US and Russia, as well as several municipalities around the state of Rhode Island, most recently directing her own staffing and consulting business. Her journey into the world of wine was inspired by an experience on a summer abroad program in 1989. While studying Russian language in the USSR, Gayle was invited to a feast prepared by gracious students from what was then the Soviet Republic of Georgia, now the country of Georgia. These friendly Georgians prepared heaps of delectable foods and served wines unlike anything she had ever tasted. More incredible, these wines were homemade, and they relayed the fact that most people in Georgia make their own wine. The generosity of spirit of these Georgians and their extraordinary wine, was never forgotten.

During many stints living and working in Russia, Gayle met colleagues with family in Georgia, and became reacquainted with the culture. Looking for a new venture, she met with Georgians eager to export wine to America. Through extensive travel and education, Gayle’s goal is to introduce Georgian and Ukrainian wines to American palates.

Cha is a certified sommelier, public speaker, founder and business owner of Cha Squared Experiences, a beverage consulting company focused on events, tourism, and education. What started as a thirst for tasting new things became a desire to learn more about how these things came to be - particularly through geography, history, and cultural traditions. She is inspired by those who express the land through the wines they produce, and her ambition is to support the work of these artisans.

(SOLD OUT) SEMINAR: Laurent Perrier Champagne + Browne Trading Caviar on the Championship Tee @ Falmouth Country Club

(SOLD OUT) SEMINAR: Laurent Perrier Champagne + Browne Trading Caviar on the Championship Tee @ Falmouth Country Club

DETAILS: Laurent-Perrier Champagne was founded in 1812 and is family and female-owned; crafting traditional and elegant champagnes for over two centuries. Nestled in a grand cru village of Champagne, France, the house is family-run, fiercely independent, and focused exclusively on champagne. The House style has been one of freshness, elegance and purity. Laurent-Perrier has a long tradition of innovation in Champagne and can be credited with many of the ideas that have defined champagne production. In the 1950's, Laurent-Perrier became one of the first Champagne houses to use only stainless-steel fermentation tanks, which maximize these qualities in our champagnes. Laurent-Perrier champagnes are all vegan and made with grapes from sustainably farmed vineyards.

Camille Cox, VP of Sales for Laurent Perrier joins us for the following two outstanding seminars as part of Portland Wine Week Opening Day events at Falmouth Country Club. These seminars take place outdoors and perched on the immaculate Championship tee:

  1. Laurent Perrier Champagne on the Championship Tee. In this first of two seated champagne-tasting seminars with Camille, you’ll delve into a side-by-side line-up of the Laurent Perrier Brut La Cuvee NV, Rose NV, Ultra Brut NV, and 2008 Vintage Brut.

  2. Laurent Perrier Champagne + Browne Trading Caviar on the Championship Tee. Browne Trading is a world-renowned purveyor of fine seafood and caviar, and they are located right here in Portland, Maine. Today they join with Camille as she pours the Laurent Perrier Brut La Cuvee NV, Blanc de Blanc NV, Rose NV, and 2008 Vintage Brut while Browne pairs the following 4 different types of caviar on blinis with their equally sought-after and delicious house-smoked salmon. Pairings for your champagne and caviar dreams!

Featured Browne Trading Caviar:

  • Caviar Galilee Royal Osetra: The Galilee farm raises their sturgeon on an all-natural diet of plants and proteins. These idyllic conditions result in sturgeon that produce roe of spectacular quality and pureness. The Royal Osetra, taken from a select few osetra sturgeon, is Galilee’s most exquisite selection. To be graded “Royal” the caviar must exhibit perfect tone, texture, and taste. You will be impressed with this caviar’s firmness on the palate, notable nutty flavor, and smooth finish.

  • Giaveri Osetra - Italy: By harnessing traditional Russian methods of caviar production, Giaveri has been able to produce a delicious and visually striking osetra sturgeon caviar. Dark amber in color with some golden hues, this osetra has a consistent nutty and buttery flavor with a crisp pure finish. The notably pure and clean finish of this osetra can be attributed to the pristine artisanal well waters in which Giaveri’s sturgeon thrive.

  • Royal Belgian Platinum - Belgium: platinum caviar produced from a hybrid sturgeon (osetra and Siberian). The aim of this hybrid sturgeon species was to create a caviar that combined the large firm pearls of the osetra sturgeon with the delicious sweet and smooth flavor of the Siberian sturgeon. Royal Belgian has achieved its aim and more, creating a caviar which has fast become one of our best-sellers here at Browne. With large pearls that have a platinum hue, this caviar has a stunning appearance. Equally impressive on the palate, the nutty overtones of the osetra sturgeon are perfectly complemented by the smooth and sweet finish of the siberian sturgeon.

  • Imperial Gold Osetra - China: produced from the classic Caspian Sea osetra sturgeon. The striking gold color of this osetra caviar alone makes it an exclusive selection. However, it is not just the gold color that sets this caviar apart, the large size and firm texture make it a striking selection. Each pearl will individually melt in your mouth with a nutty flavor and smooth finish. Historically, if a Russian osetra caught in the Caspian Sea exhibited golden pearls, its roe was immediately earmarked for the Tsar himself!

Featured Laurent-Perrier champagnes across the two seminars (see the details of each seminar for which wines are being poured among this list):

  • Blanc de Blancs NV The newest addition to the LP range, this brut nature with zero added sugar offers fresh minerality, hints of citrus, and a crisp, clean finish. Aged for over 6 years – Dosage 0g/L – 100% Chardonnay – Premier Cru – James Suckling 94 points

SEMINAR: Tasting through the reds of R. López de Heredia, Rioja, Spain @ Falmouth Country Club

SEMINAR: Tasting through the reds of R. López de Heredia, Rioja, Spain @ Falmouth Country Club

SPONSORED BY FALMOUTH COUNTRY CLUB.

DETAILS: “Perhaps no winery in the world guards its traditions as proudly and steadfastly as López de Heredia does… it is paradoxically a winery in the vanguard, its viticulture and winemaking, is a shining, visionary example for young, forward-thinking producers all over the world… At López de Heredia, there is serenity that comes with adherence to core principles…” August 12th, 2009 by Eric Asimov, The New York Times.

COST: Only $40

RESERVE: Click here to purchase tickets

There are few wineries in Spain, or in the world, whose name conjures the heritage and prestige evoked by R. López de Heredia. Little about this winery has changed in the 142 years since its founding by, Don Rafael López de Heredia. The family adheres to a winemaking doctrine blueprinted in the 1880s – to make wine only from their own vineyards.

When it comes to the winemaking process, the work in the vineyard has not changed since the 1880’s. R. López de Heredia is a “traditionalist” through and through and keeping the traditions alive today is important to maintain not only the quality but the personality of the house. Working by hand with some of the best terroir, respecting the soil, and working with nature on what it needs is something R. López de Heredia is very proud of.

Today, R. López de Heredia’s great-granddaughter Mercedes López de Heredia is the winemaker of these world-class, highly sought after, and increasingly rare wines. This is one of several one-in-a-lifetime wine tasting seminars part of this year’s Portland Wine Week Opening Day schedule.

Wine professional Cary Coor will lead you in a wine tasting of the following current release reds across their portfolio + one library wine. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to taste these incredible wines side by side. They will be available for purchase through Wine Wise for those who would like to add some to their cellar collection:

  • 2012 Viña Cubillo Crianza

  • 2008 Viña Bosconia Reserva

  • 2008 Viña Tondonia Reserva

  • 2008 Viña Tondonia Reserva

THE VINEYARD TONDONIA  Don Rafael López de Heredia acquired Viña Tondonia from a group of clergies in 1913. The Tondonia vineyard is a beautiful vineyard of over 247 acres, 1,600 feet above sea level, situated on the right bank of the Ebro River in Rioja Alta. The soil is Alluvial clay with a high concentration of Limestone. There are 4 varieties of red grapes planted in this vineyard: Tempranillo, Mazuelo, Graciano, and Garnacho.

THE VINEYARD BOSCONIA  The vineyard “El Bosque” is situated beside the Ebro River, with a height of 1,527 feet above sea level, less than a mile from the winery. The soil is clay and Limestone. It has a total of 37 acres: Tempranillo, red Garnacho, Mazuelo, and Graciano. Originally, the founder, due to his French influence, gave the wines names inspired by French wines.

THE VINEYARD CUBILLAS  The Viña Cubillo wine comes from the vineyard “Cubillas”, which is 2 miles away from the winery. Its height is 1,348 feet above sea level and the vines have an average age of 40 years. The soil is from the terciaria age, composed of clay and limestone.  The surface is 59 acres: Tempranillo, Garnacho, Mazuelo, and Graciano. Historically, the wines from that vineyard were called “Special Harvest”.

About Cary Coor — she hails from the Midwest but her roots are in Spanish vines. Cary is currently a WSET student with a passion for educating others on the remarkable wines of Spain. Cary has been collaborating with Think Global Wines, the U.S. importer of R. López de Heredia wines, for 6 years. She travels from coast to coast presenting and sharing Think Global’s incredible wine portfolio.

SEMINAR: Tasting Through The Wines of Chateau Musar @ Falmouth Country Club

SPONSORED BY FALMOUTH COUNTRY CLUB.

DETAILS: Chateau Musar is an iconic winery that put Lebanon on the international wine scene and was a champion of natural winemaking from the start.  Chateau Musar, located in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley, was founded in 1930 by Gaston Hochar.  After studying in Bordeaux, his son Serge became winemaker. Serge spent 18 years perfecting the formula for Chateau Musar’s Red and was chosen as Decanter Magazine’s first ‘Man of the Year’ in 1984 for his dedication to producing superb quality wines during Lebanon’s Civil War (1975-1990). Recognition from Michael Broadbent, at the 1979 Bristol Wine Fair, threw Musar into the international spotlight and helped create a cult-like following. A legend of a winemaker, often heralded as a philosopher of wine, Serge passed away in 2014. The Hochar family remains committed to his legacy and continues to present unique, terroir-driven wines of incredible distinction and ageability.

Please join Elizabeth George, Broadbent’s New England VP of sales, as she takes you through the history of the Chateau Musar winery and its various styles through two different wine tasting seminars:

She’s been lucky to explore some of the best wineries throughout Europe, South America, Australia and New Zealand and is constantly amazed by the dedicated families behind each property. PANEL DISCUSSION & TASTING: The Past, Present and Future of Winemaking in the American Northeast @ Falmouth Country Club

PANEL DISCUSSION & TASTING: The Past, Present and Future of Winemaking in the American Northeast @ Falmouth Country Club

SPONSORED BY BANGOR SAVINGS BANK.

DETAILS: After decades of second-class citizenship status in the American wine world, Northeastern U.S. wines have recently attained a new level of recognition and admiration for their high quality, distinctive terroir expression, and character. Some masters have been at it for a long time, while other recent entrants have brought new energy and perspective. This panel will bring together exceptional winemakers from across that spectrum, to explore and exhibit the delicious and horizon-broadening variety that this vast region has to offer.

The excitement is emerging from a combination of factors: shifting conditions due to the climate crisis; a younger generation less beholden to artificial boundaries separating handmade wines, ciders, and beers; an overall growing appreciation for the lighter body, higher acidity, and sometimes unconventional flavor profiles at which the Northeast excels; and winemakers of all ages increasingly informed by global trends in minimal intervention and maximal expression of place.

We’ll discuss and taste scintillating, tradition-minded expressions of Vinifera grapes, as well as hybrid varieties and even fruit other than grapes.

COST: Only $15 per person
